Moving House
Moving House
You have found the property that you want to buy and dates have been agreed for the exchange of contracts (which is when a legally binding contract comes into force) At this point you should make enquires for price quotes and availability with two or three removal companies to give you enough time to compare quotes and the services they offer, most removal companies offer a different range of service which can be a full packing service- where the removal teams pack everything – to a fragile pack where they only pack fragile items. There is a national Guild of Removers and Storers and they strongly recommend you choose a firm that is registered with the Removals Industry Ombudsman Scheme. Companies registered with the scheme are subject to inspection and must conform to certain standards. Be realistic about the quantity of furniture you have when getting a quote as this will decide the size of the van required and number of staff required on the day.
When the exchange of contracts has taken place you will now have a completion date (moving date) you should then confirm your booking with the removals firm or organise van hire if you are conducting the move yourself. Finally, as removal vans are usually very large it might be wise to warn your neighbours.
Useful Tips
Notify Relevant Parties of Your Change of Address
4 to 6 weeks before your move, make a list of everyone who needs your updated address, including:
• Doctor and dentist
• Credit card companies and bank
• TV Licensing
• Driving License (DVLA)
• Insurance companies
• Inland Revenue and local council
Contact Utility Companies
A week before moving, contact your gas, electric, and water suppliers to provide updated meter readings on the day of your move.
Arrange Mail Redirection
Set up mail forwarding with the Post Office to ensure all your mail reaches your new address. Note, there is a fee for this service.
Cancel Deliveries
One week before your move, cancel all regular deliveries like newspapers, milk, or any subscriptions that you no longer need at your current address.
Finalise Your Telephone Services
Arrange the final bill for your landline and organize the connection date for phone and internet services at your new home.
Organise Appliance Disconnections
If you’re taking appliances with you, such as washing machines, fridges, or gas cookers, arrange for their disconnection well in advance.
Prepare Bed Linen
Pack bed linen at the top of your boxes so that you can easily make the beds as soon as you arrive at your new home.
Plan for Child and Pet Care
Think about child care and pet care on moving day. Ask family or friends to help look after them to make the process smoother.
